In our 4D-Geodesigning Urban Transformation course, we foster student engagement through a dynamic blend of online and in-class activities. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, powered by ArcGIS, students actively participate in reconstructing and simulating web-based 4D urban models. Collaborative efforts across disciplines are encouraged through team-based projects, promoting mutual learning. Additionally, peer-review activities contribute to a vibrant exchange of ideas, ensuring students remain actively involved in the learning process.

Elements of the Course

Our course introduces innovative elements by integrating technology, communication, and online learning materials into the urban planning and design curriculum. Students engage in hands-on activities such as reconstructing building and zoning regulations in web-based 4D urban models. The interdisciplinary nature of the course allows students from various disciplines to collaborate, fostering a holistic understanding of urban transformation. Moreover, the course combines online and traditional teaching methods, providing a flexible and comprehensive learning experience.

Effect on Student Learning

The innovative elements have significantly enhanced student learning. The use of web-based 4D urban models, peer reviews, and interdisciplinary teamwork has provided a practical and immersive learning environment. Students actively apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, developing a deeper understanding of urban planning and design issues. The integration of technology and online platforms has facilitated self-paced learning, contributing to a more dynamic and engaging educational experience.

I have successfully applied the software and skills acquired in this course in another class this term, and I plan to do so in future courses.
Anonymous Student Feedback

I would recommend adopting a blended learning approach, combining online and in-class activities to cater to diverse learning styles. Encouraging interdisciplinary teamwork and peer reviews fosters a rich learning environment, allowing students to benefit from diverse perspectives. The integration of web-based 4D urban models and the use of technology for analysis and communication provide a hands-on and practical dimension to the course, making it relevant and engaging for students.

Continuous feedback on student learning progress is ensured through ongoing (peer) review activities within the class. Students regularly share and evaluate each other’s work, fostering constructive discussions. Additionally, a blended learning approach allows for continuous online assessments, ensuring that students receive timely feedback on their understanding of software and the application of urban planning and design concepts. This iterative feedback loop enhances the learning experience and promotes improvement over the course duration.
